U.S. law makers right now are debating on new laws to combat online piracy in order to protect intellectual properties and copyright holders. Piracy and copyright violation is not right and there are already laws in place that fights it. However this new laws will give so much power to the authority that it could break the internet.

Even though these are U.S. laws, it still might affect other non-U.S. citizens. The proposed laws have the capability to temper with the technical architecture of the Internet through manipulation of the Domain Name System (DNS). Every website on the internet are being routed through DNS. When you type ‘Facebook.com’, it’s the DNS who will lookup in its directory to translate it to series of number, known as IP address that which routes to the right servers.

Now by having control and manipulating the DNS architecture, U.S. law enforcement could change the DNS settings for ‘Facebook.com’ or any other websites to point to their serves thus blocking the access to that website. The website is still there, but nobody knows how to go there. It’s as if someone had removed the street signs to your home and the postman can’t figure out which street you are on and can not deliver your mail.

Also stated on the proposed legislation that search engines have to remove links to websites that which is suspected of hosting counterfeit, copyright violation materials. This could be any websites on the internet.

The United States of America have been very vocal about being against the internet practices for countries like China, Iran and even Malaysia, and yet they are discussing similar laws in which lets them censored the internet in similar ways like China and Iran.

Do illegal download really affects the U.S. economy? This U.K. study says that people who illegally download music from the internet also spend more money on music than anyone else.

There are three laws being discussed, Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and Online Protection and Digital Enforcement Act (OPEN). All these three proposed laws are somewhat similar. They have the potential to break the internet. If you are an U.S. citizen, please vote out those who plans to put these laws in. The Internet people are counting on you!

Some of major Internet websites will be going dark for 24 hours in protest. We will try to cover this as much as we can.
