While Anonymous brings down www.malaysia.gov.my, LulzSec brings down www.cia.gov. LulzSec have been getting a lot of media attention with their online shenanigans hacking high profile targets like Sony, PBS, Senate.gov and most recently bringing down cia.gov. According to this Gizmodo post, right when we are all preoccupied with #OpMalaysia LulzSec declares war on 4Chan.
4Chan is a popular image board. Some say it’s where most web memes started. 4Chan is also being known as a website championed by the group Anonymous. The Hacktivist group Anonymous has used 4Chan for it’s press released few times. Now with LulzSec attacking 4Chan they are indirectly attacking Anonymous too. Or maybe that was their target all along?
LulzSec is said to be a splinter group consist of former high profile Anonymous members. Are we about to see a cyber civil war?
The conflict started, with LulzSec’s massive take down of gaming serversfrom EVE Online, Minecraft, to League of Legends, which all happens to be favorites among 4Channers. Apparently this massive takedown was what broke the camels back.
LulzSec manage to bring the website 4Chan down and claims that 50% of 4Channers’ computer are infected, becoming zombies waiting for orders to attack anybody LulzSec wants to attack. They even make prank calls to 4Chan’s web hosting company.
In response, 4Chan members are on a manhunt to identify LulzSec members and turn them to the FBI. “If you know who these fuckers are… phone the fucking FBI” – what was written on a widely circulated poster on 4Chan :-
Anonymous as a group have always put themselves as a collective that fights for a higher purpose, freedom on information and against Internet censorship. My guess that they wouldn’t want to have anything to do with this shenanigans. However this might effect their day to day operations and sooner or later they would have to response to LulzSec.
Will we see #OpLulzSec soon on Anonymous? If it were to come to a point where LulzSec and Anonymous start throwing blows at each other, there might be some civilian casualties.
[UPDATE] In a recent tweet from LulzSec they have made it clear that they are not going after Anonymous, just 4Chan, actually just a subset of 4Chan:-
In one of Anonymous’ Twitter account they did give LulzSec props for bringing down www.cia.gov:-
Here is a tweet from Anonymous clarifying yet again that Anonymous and LulzSec are not at war and that they have nothing to do with 4Chan’s /b/: -
Just thought I clear this thing up.
